From Stylesetter to Freelance Blogger

When Barney’s New York fashion director Amanda Brooks stepped down recently, the 38-year-old style setter cited a surprising reason in an interview with the New York Times: She was inspired by Ree Drummond’s popular blog, The Pioneer Woman.

(Drummond’s tagline for the blog, which features recipes, homemaking tips and mothering insights: I’m a desperate housewife. I live in the country. I channel Lucille Ball, Vivien Leigh, and Ethel Merman. Welcome to my frontier!)

Brooks, a mother of two, told the New York Times that the blog “got me really fired up. It’s the idea of having a career on your own terms, anywhere.”

Brooks is going to trade her Lower East Side digs for a farm in Oxfordshire, England, owned by her husband’s family. She hopes to find inspiration for her blogging at ILoveYourStyle.com, a blog she started in 2009, in her new lifestyle.

While Brooks’ lifestyle sounds a tad more glamorous than the typical freelancer’s, we loved her motivation. Aren’t we all inspired by that dream: To forge our own path, on our own terms, with no boss?
